Death toll rises to 107 in Bengal hooch tradegy

Kolkata, Dec. 15 (ANI): Atleast 50 more people have fallen victim to the hooch tradegy raising the overall death toll to 107.

 

According to reports 83 died at the Diamond Harbour Hospital, two in Mograhat, and 16 at the MR Bangur Hospital. Official sources have said the toll is likely to go up.

 

Around 50 people are still battling for their lives.he people who died in the incident were mostly labourers, rickshaw-pullers and hawkers.

 

A large number of people were admitted to hospitals last night, the sources said, adding that the casualty was likely to go up.

 

Four persons have been arrested for supplying the illicit liquor. initial investigations indicate that Noor Islam Fakir, also known as Khora Badshah, was the key hooch supplier.

 

Soon after the incident yesterday, area residents had smashed a liquor manufacturing unit at Mograhat and the joints from where it was being sold at Sangrampur.

 

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was in favour of taking strong action to stop the sale of illegal liquor.

 

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of those who have died. (ANI)
