Russia downgrades relations with Qatar following attack on envoy

Moscow, Dec 6(ANI): Russia has said it was downgrading its relations with Qatar and withdrawing its ambassador Vladimir Titorenko after he was attacked by customs officials at Doha Airport in November.

 

Moscow has "made the decision to downgrade relations with Qatar. Russian Ambassador (Vladimir) Titorenko will leave Qatar after finishing his course of treatment in the coming days," The China Daily quoted a Russian Foreign Office statement, as saying. ccording to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Titorenko was physically assaulted when he passed through customs at Doha airport after returning to Qatar from Jordan on November 29.

 

Qatar did not respond to the Russian Foreign Ministry statement, which demanded apology for the incident.

 

The Russian stance has cast a cloud over Arctic liquefied natural gas (LNG) project between both sides.

 

Qatar had earlier indicated that negotiations were underway to acquire a stake in Russian gas producer Novatek's LNG project. he project aims at developing the South Tambey field located in the Arctic area. (ANI)
