Nainital, Dec 5 (ANI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the ruling Congress Party of compromising with the principles of Mahatma Gandhi on the issue of foreign direct investment (FDI), as he was against foreign goods.
"The Central Government had committed a sin by allowing more than 50 percent FDI in retail sector and thus marginalizing petty traders," said BJP President Nitin Gadkari.
"They (government) have committed sin by allowing more than 50 percent FDI in retail sector and marginalizing petty traders. Is it a Congress of Mahatma Gandhi? Is the Congress following an indigenous economic policy? This is foreign Congress headed by Sonia Gandhi and not of Bapu. They have got nothing to do with indigenous economic policy," Gadkari added.
He also slammed Sonia Gandhi for not articulating the party's position on the issue and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for not attending the opposition parties meeting after calling it.
"Why doesn't Sonia Gandhi speak about FDI in retail? Why don't you articulate the position of the Congress Party? What kind of Prime Minister we have? He calls a meeting of opposition parties but doesn't attend it," Gadkari said.
The government had last month approved 51 percent FDI in multi-brand retail, paving the entry of firms such as Wal-Mart and Carrefour into one of the world's largest untapped markets.
The new policy, seen as one of the most important government economic reforms in years, may commit supermarkets to strict local sourcing requirements and minimum investment levels aimed at protecting jobs. (ANI)
