Anna's remarks on Sharad Pawar provoke NCP protest

New Delhi, Wed, 30 Nov 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Nov. 30 (ANI): Scores of activists of the youth wing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) gathered at the Raj Ghat here on Wednesday to protest against veteran social activist Anna Hazare for his remark on the recent physical attack on their party chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar.

The President of Nationalist Youth Congress Party, Rajiv Jha, led the sit-in protest that was later addressed by Tariq Anwar, the party's general secretary.

"The way Anna Hazare reacted to the attack on India's Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar by a disgruntled man the other day was awful. Anna Hazare had followed the ideologies of Mahatma Gandhi and led a mass movement against corruption and inflation, which the youth had supported. We condemn his statements," said Jha.

Anna Hazare had remarked on hearing of the assault on Sharad Pawar, asking why the youth had hit Pawar only once.

"They slapped him? Only one slap," he said.

Harvinder Singh, a resident of Rohini, had assaulted Pawar on November 24 when he was coming out of a public auditorium on Parliament Street, claiming to protest against price rise and corruption.

Private security guards had overpowered Singh after he had assaulted Pawar.

Singh, who is presently in judicial custody for 14 days, has been charged with assaulting 71-year-old Pawar, a public servant and threatening him, besides trying to kill himself by slashing his wrist with his small 'kirpan'. (ANI)

He had also attacked telecom minister Sukhram Sukh Ram outside a Delhi court on November 19. (ANI)
