Sydney, Nov 30(ANI): Former Australian batsman Mark Waugh has backed the Argus Review's recommendation of placing captain Michael Clarke in Cricket Australia (CA)'s new five-man selection panel, saying that it is the 'right way to go'.
The panel now includes Clarke, coach Mickey Arthur, chairman John Inverarity, Rod Marsh and Andy Bichel.
"I'm not too bothered either way. The captain is the guy on the field that's got to have the players there that he wants, he's got to give the ball to a bowler and be confident in his ability. I think the captain should have an input, definitely," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Waugh, as saying.
"Whether he should be a selector ... it could make it a bit tricky at times if you've got a mate in the team ... and you've got to make a tough decision. But I think it's the right way to go," he added.
Clarke had earlier publicly supported the retention of his beleaguered trio of Ricky Ponting, Brad Haddin, and Mitchell Johnson for the first Test against New Zealand at the Gabba, which starts on Thursday. (ANI)
