Ahmedabad, Nov 29 (ANI): The Kankaria zoo in Ahmedabad, welcomed four new residents as gifts from Sri Lanka.
Zoo veterinarians made special arrangements for the gigantic snakes including enclosures with thermometers to constantly monitor the temperature.
The anacondas will initially be kept in quarantine in order for them to acclimatise to their new home and bond with the zookeepers.
"The National Zoo of Sri Lanka has gifted four green anacondas to this zoo. The anacondas are being kept inside a cage. Out of the four anacondas, two are male and the other two are female. Two of the anacondas are three and a half feet in size and the other two are four feet. They are three years old," said Bijal Patel, Operator of the Culture and Entertainment Department.
The anacondas are expected to attract hundreds of visitors to the zoo.
"This is the biggest gift for us. I have been here for the past 22 years. This is the first time that we have imported any animal. This is good for an Ahmedabad zoo. This will attract lots of visitors. People were asking for international animals," said Dr. R.K Sahu, the Superintendent of Kankaria Zoo.
"After these anacondas in the zoo, people will be eager and people in large numbers will come to see them. Especially the school children who have seen pictures of anacondas, they will get to see the anacondas in this zoo," he added.
The green anaconda is the largest snake in the world and can grow to 29 feet (8.8 metres) and weigh more than 227 kilograms. The females are significantly larger than the males.
