Advani welcomes Delhi HC verdict in cash-for-vote case

Chandigarh, Thu, 17 Nov 2011 ANI

Chandigarh, Nov 17 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani has welcomed the Delhi High Court's decision of granting bail to the accused in the 2008 cash-for-vote scam.

"Court has granted them bail and we are satisfied with that. We want that not only these people should be declared innocent, but also be honoured in Parliament, as they have strengthened the cause of democracy," Advani told the media here.

Further slamming the Congress party, Advani said that government had sent innocent people behind the bars to cover up its wrong doings.

"It is very unfortunate that all those who were not involved and tried to exposed them (Congress party), they were sent to jail. These people are called whistleblowers across the world and laws are also there to protect them but here (in India) whistleblowers are sent to jails," he added.

Two former BJP MPs and Advani's former aide Sudheendra Kulkarni were on Wednesday granted bail by the Delhi High Court along with two other accused in the 2008 cash-for-vote case.

Justice M L Mehta also granted anticipatory bail to BJP MP Ashok Argal, summoned by a special court to stand trial in the case.

The others who were granted bail are Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh's former aide Sanjeev Saxena and alleged BJP activist Suhail Hindustani. All five had been denied bail by the trial court.

The High Court gave the reprieve to the all six accused in the cash-for-vote scam after the Delhi Police told the court that it had no objection to the grant of bail to them as the investigation in the case was over and they were not required for custodial interrogation.

The cash-for-votes scam had rocked proceedings in the Lok Sabha in 2008, when the ruling UPA Government, led by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, allegedly bribed lawmakers of other parties to help winning the confidence vote. (ANI)
