Coimbatore, Nov 4 (ANI): Elated by the astonishing popularity of Formula One in India, the country's first F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan has said that he was amazed by the massive response the sport received recently conducted circuit race.
Addressing media here, Karthikeyan said: "I think the momentum is much better than what we anticipated it to be. We never thought it is going to be this big, it has become humungous, huge, so I think this popularity will continue for the next many years to come."
Speaking about the city's preparedness and capacity to host international races, Karthikeyan said: "Well, as you may be aware Brazil is developing C and D grade tracks. Of course the infrastructure is not up to the mark, rather poor. As for Coimbatore that boasts of a good track, it is being upgraded to become a proper C grade track."
He further said that southern India has a good scope of producing international drivers other than having a potential to emerge as a leading arena for the sports.
"No doubt, Coimbatore and Chennai have been the most prominent and popular venues for motor sports and this trend in on the rise. As you know, Coimbatore is the home to the motor sports with champion drivers like Jaikumar and Vijayakumar performing very well on the tracks," he said.
Asserting that the manual operation of the machines and skill of the driver overrules the technology behind the wheels, Karthikeyan said: "Today, it is not more electronic or automatic. Engine capacity is reduced. No more electronics. The tyre replacements are manual. As such it is the skill of the individual driver at the wheel that matters. And the drivers are adapting to these changes." (ANI)
