Rahul Gandhi assesses Uttar Pradesh situation ahead of polls

Chandauli (Uttar Pradesh) , Wed, 02 Nov 2011 ANI

Chandauli (Uttar Pradesh), Nov. 2 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi visited a village in Chandauli District here on Wednesday and interacted with the villagers.

"No development work is going on, pension is not being given. The government has forgotten the weaving community, involved in carpet industry. Don't you people get anger? You all sit very quietly; I get angry when I come here," Gandhi told villagers here.

Rahul Gandhi, who appears determined to give a tough fight to the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) during the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, has been visiting the state frequently.

On Tuesday, Gandhi paid a surprise visit to the holy shrine of Guru Ravidas Maharaj in Varanasi.

The Uttar Pradesh elections, which are scheduled to be held in 2012, are being seen as a stepping-stone for the Congress Party to establish a firm political base in India's fifth largest and most populous state before the 2014 general elections.

Rahul Gandhi's visits have focused equally on Dalits, Muslims, the other backward classes and Hindus. (ANI)
