Cross border bonhomie marks Diwali at LoC

Poonch, Thu, 27 Oct 2011 ANI

Poonch, Oct 27 (ANI): Officers and soldiers of the Indian and Pakistani armies exchanged sweets at the Line of Control (LoC) on the occasion of Diwali here on Wednesday.

V P Christopher, commanding officer of the Bihar Regiment, said the tradition was over two decades old.

"This is the procedure which we are following for the last, maybe, two-three decades. By exchanging sweets, we make sure that we both (countries) are friends and we want to remain as friends," said Christopher.

He added that while it was important to be vigilant and weary in a border zone, it was also necessary to cast aside animosities during festive occasions.

His sentiments were echoed by Javed Omer, his Pakistani counterpart.

"I think it is a very good gesture, and it is a very positive step towards peace. Neighbours should live happily and peacefully together, and these are the occasions where we can show that we are also involved in your happy occasions and we are concerned about you people," said Omer. (ANI)
