Gaya (Bihar), Oct 20 (ANI): Disillusioned by Maoist ideology and extremist activities, Nanda Singh, a rebel in Bihar's Gaya District turned into a teacher and is providing education to poor children for free of cost.
Resident of Jehanabad district, Nanda Singh joined hands with Maoist groups in 1995, with the aim of serving the poor and to have access to their basic rights.
He was arrested with huge cache of arms and ammunitions on the charges of abduction and murder.
Speaking to the mediapersons on Wednesday, Singh said later he realised that only education can facilitate in transforming the life of the poor and he decided to follow the non-violent means for serving the society.
"In 1995, I joined the Maoist group. I had a passion of helping the poor but after joining their group I realised that the poor cannot be helped by holding arms in our hands, till they are not educated. So, I contemplated in the jail, I read books written on Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa and they used to follow non-violence. This inculcated in me the feeling of helping the poor and I made them my idols," said Singh.
He further said by frightening people, the Maoists could not bring the poor to support them.
Talking about the school, he said the school was started in 2010 and presently three such schools are running in the nearby villages, where poor children are provided free education along with food and books.
"We started this school last year on October 2, 2010 on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary and presently we are running three such schools. We ask for charity from the people living in near by villages and the money that is gathered is used for providing food and books to the children. Our aim is to educate children and inculcate in then, the habit of serving the society," added Singh. (ANI)
