Aligarh, Oct 18 (ANI): Union Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid, who skipped the founder's day function of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) due to teachers protest against his visit on Monday, said he was deeply saddened by the protests.
Talking to reporters here on Monday, Khurshid said: "All over the world, the people from Aligarh are celebrating the Sir Syed Day. Today is a pious day connected with history, and even on such a day Aligarh had to face such unfortunate protests by which I am deeply aggrieved."
He further said that it was a baseless argument that his visit could be equated as support to the Vice Chancellor, facing corruption charges.
"The arrival of a Union Minister does not guarantee help in CBI inquiry. Are all the students who are studying here, all the teachers who are teaching here and drawing their salaries here helping the Vice Chancellor in the CBI inquiry in any way?" asked Khurshid.
Khurshid, who was in the city to attend the commemoration meeting of Sir Syed Day, did not turn up for the event as the slogan shouting teachers and students blocked the entry to the campus.
A large number of students had gathered outside the Vice-Chancellor's lodge forcing the authorities to lock the gate.
The protestors saw the visit of Khurshid as support to university's Vice Chancellor P. K. Abdul Azeez, who is facing corruption charges.
Protestors were of the view that Khurshid's visit confirmed that the Vice Chancellor was receiving help in the inquiry that is being conducted against him by the CBI. (ANI)
