Dimapur, Oct 16 (ANI): Although several militant outfits have signed the ceasefire agreement with the government, there has been an increase in the number of extortion cases in the Nagaland.
It has often occurred, that traders and businessmen in Nagaland are killed and their children abducted in order to extort money.
In between the months of June and September alone, 30 cases of extortion have been reported in which 41 people have been arrested.llegal taxes from truckers, shopkeepers and businessmen continue to be taken.
Recently several trade bodies, women's groups and other stakeholders participated in a seminar, which was organized to tackle this growing menace, in Dimapur.
"Dimapur is the commercial hub of Nagaland. Several insurgent groups that operate in Northeast are based in Nagaland. They are operating with different motives like collecting illegal tax, extortion and killings. The people here in the state are now facing a big problem," said K V Achumi, a participant.
The participants urged the government to take stricter measures to bring the situation under control.
"The police are doing a fine job but sometimes they have to use force against them. When I say force sometimes it is necessary to shoot them as it gives a clear message to extortionist that this is not acceptable," said Joel, an NGO worker.
The State police and other law enforcing agencies have increased vigil on the borders and closed many of the interstate checkpoints to stop the extortion of truck drivers.
"Extortions are increasing and this is because now more underground groups are there due to the splits. Now almost all the five groups are operating in Dimapur for Extortion. We are trying our level best to check this menace," said Z Mero, Superintendent of Police, Nagaland. (ANI)
