New Delhi, Oct 14 (ANI): Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, V Narayanaswamy has said that the Central Government wants an amicable solution to the ongoing stir over the Kudankulam nuclear power plant project.
Talking to reporters here, Narayanaswamy said: "We are working to find an amicable solution to the ongoing opposition to the project. The people who are agitating have got every right to agitate, but in a peaceful way."
He further said that Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is in touch with the Tamil Nadu government and urging its cooperation as well.
" Dr Singh is apprised of the ongoing protest against the nuke plant and has again written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa over the issue," he said.
Meanwhile, Jayalalithaa said the issue would take time to get resolved.
"This is not something that will be resolved by the state government overnight; it will take time. I do not wish to make any further comments on this now because it is a very emotive issue and a controversial issue," she added.
The project, which is being set up in collaboration between India and Russia, envisages the building of two 1,000 MW type reactors by the end of December 2011.
However, in the wake of the Fukushima incident in Japan, several nuclear projects across India such as the one at Jaitapur in Maharashtra have run into rough weather, as protesting locals and activists argue that such plants could adversely affect the environment.
There were 20 nuclear reactors in operation in six power plants, generating over 4,000 megawatts of electricity in the country in 2010, and five other plants are under construction. (ANI)
