London, Oct 12 (ANI): British Prime Minister David Cameron wrote to Gurkha supporters to condemn an internet hate campaign triggered by claims that a Hampshire town is being "swamped" by the former Nepalese soldiers and their families.
Cameron also said he was considering providing funding to help them settle here, express.co.uk reports.
Cameron's letter was sent despite the fact that one of his own defence ministers, Aldershot MP Gerald Howarth, called for Gurkha veterans to be dispersed around Britain like "asylum seekers".
His support represents a major boost for Joanna Lumley, actress and Gurkhas' rights campaigner.
Lumley, the public face of the campaign to win settlement rights for the former soldiers, has written to Cameron and Nick Clegg to urge them to honour pledges to Gurkhas.
Cameron condemned the "emotive language" used against the Gurkhas and said he was "very sympathetic" to concerns about "the worsening situation in Aldershot and the increasing hostility towards the Gurkha community generally". (ANI)
