Rooney's dad vows to clear name his name

London, Fri, 07 Oct 2011 ANI

London, Oct 7 (ANI): Ace Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's father has vowed to clear his name after being arrested on suspicion of being involved in a football betting fraud.

Wayne Rooney Snr, 48, and Richie Rooney, 54, were two of nine men taken into custody in the West Derby area of Liverpool and questioned for several hours.

Nine men - who were all freed on bail later on Thursday - were arrested as part of the probe into suspicious gambling patterns around a Scottish Premier League match last December, including Motherwell footballer Steve Jennings.

Rooney Snr's solicitor said his client "vigorously" denied the charges and was "co-operating fully" with the police investigation, The Mirror reports.

Anthony Barnfather, partner at Pannone solicitors who are representing Rooney Snr, said in a statement" "Mr Rooney vigorously denies all of these allegations. We are co-operating fully with the investigation. No further comment will be made at this time."

Merseyside Police said the arrests were the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission into suspicious betting activity.

The investigation relates to a match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14 last year. (ANI)
