Japan develops radiation monitoring smartphone

Tokyo, Thu, 06 Oct 2011 ANI

Tokyo, Oct 6 (ANI): A smartphone cover that monitors levels of radiation has been unveiled at Ceatec, Japan's biggest consumer electronics show.

Japan's largest mobile phone carrier, NTT Docomo, showcased its new radiation monitoring technology to the first of an anticipated 200,000 visitors, The Telegraph reports.

Reports suggest that taking into consideration the heightened fears about radioactivity following the nuclear disaster that engulfed the Fukushima plant after March's earthquake and tsunami, the company have created smartphone covers that can gauge airborne radiation levels.

NTT Docomo's communication device development department Assistant Manager, Kouki Hayashi, said the company was still searching for ways the devices could be used.

"It's still in development ... but one example would be for a mother with young children, who could then measure the radiation at nearby parks or on the way to school," he said. (ANI)
