Siliguri, Oct 2 (ANI): Amid the ongoing 'Durga Puja' celebrations, which is the most happening festival of the Bengalis, renowned sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik created a 10 feet high sculpture of Hindu goddess 'Durga' in West Bengal's Siliguri District on Saturday.
The Agragamee Sangha club of Siliguri, who are celebrating their 50th Durga Puja this year, invited Pattnaik to make the sculpture of goddess 'Durga' with sand.
An extremely elated Pattnaik shaped a magnificent sand structure depicting the Hindu Goddess Durga. He even prayed to the goddess to end corruption in the country.
The Orissa born sand artist further said that he tried to showcase through his art that it was important that corruption be rooted out from the country.
"This year, I have created a 10 feet high sculpture of Durga Mata. For the last 15 years I have been making the sculpture of Durga Mata, but this year we have made it in a different way and have used different colours. Our basic message this year is 'Maa kill corruption'," he said.
Pattnaik used 24 trucks of sand for the sculpture, which was collected from the local river.
Durga Puja also referred to as 'Durgotsava' (Festival of Durga), is an annual Hindu festival in South Asia that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Durga. It refers to all the six days observed as Mahalaya, Shashthi, Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, Maha Navami and Bijoya Dashami.
Durga Puja is widely celebrated in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Jharkhand, Orissa and Tripura, where it is a five-day annual holiday.
In West Bengal and Tripura, which has majority of Bengali Hindus it is the biggest festival of the year. Not only is it the biggest Hindu festival celebrated throughout the State, but it is also the most significant socio-cultural event in Bengali society.
Durga Puja is also celebrated in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Punjab, Kashmir, Karnataka and Kerala. (ANI)
