Washington, Oct 1 (ANI): GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul has slammed President Barack Obama for giving orders of U.S.-born al Qaeda operative Anwar al-Awlaki's killing, insisting that he should have been tried first.
Paul, known for his fierce libertarian views, said the death of the New Mexico native-turned-terrorist-preacher was like "assassination".
"I don't think it's a good way to deal with our problems. If the American people accept this blindly and casually that we now have an accepted practice of the President assassinating people who he thinks are bad guys, I think it's sad," the New York Daily News quoted him, as saying.
Al-Awlaki, considered one of the most powerful Al Qaeda operatives after Osama Bin Laden, was killed in a U.S. air strike targeting his convoy in Yemen on Friday morning.
The 40-year-old is believed to have been behind some of the recent attacks on U.S. soil, including the failed Christmas Day bombing of a plane heading to Detroit in 2009.
Obama, like several lawmakers, called Awlaki's death a "major blow" to Al Qaeda and insisted the U.S. will be "resolute in its commitment" in exterminating the terrorist group. (ANI)
