Arunachal CM denies role in minister's abduction

New Delhi, Sat, 01 Oct 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Oct 1 (ANI): The political sparring in Arunachal Pradesh, which is a strategic state bordering China, does not seem to be ending, with Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin rubbishing allegations made by his PHED and Social Welfare Minister, Chowna Mein, that he was behind the latter's abduction.

Arunachal Pradesh is facing a political crisis since the death of former chief minister Dorjee Khandu, and now the present incumbent Gamlin's fate is also hanging in the balance.

Several ruling Congress legislators are camping in New Delhi to demand a change in leadership due to Gamlin's dictatorial attitude.

The crisis further worsened with the kidnapping of an MLA near the Arunachal CM's official bungalow on September 25th, followed by the kidnapping of Chowna Mein on September 26.

Gamlin said: "No, it is completely wrong. These allegations were made by Chowna Mein in Delhi. I was completely taken aback. I myself dropped him at his house. Till then, there was no complaint regarding abduction. Yesterday, he (Mein) has filed an FIR, but that can be an afterthought. But at that point of time when he met me and next day also there was no complaint."

The Chief Minister ruled out that there was any instability in the state, but accepted that Arunachal MLAs and ministers are camping in Delhi demanding a change in the state's leadership.

Mein had claimed on Wednesday that he was, in fact, abducted at gunpoint on September 26 evening around 5.05pm.

"I was abducted. At around 5.05pm I saw three vehicles coming and some of the boys inside the vehicles pointed at me. Before I could react they pushed me inside the vehicle and threatened to shoot me. The vehicles stopped at the back area of the CM's bungalow after crossing two security gates.

On meeting the Chief Minister, Mein said he had vehemently protested the way he was abducted despite being a senior minister.

"The CM expressed ignorance about the abduction, but I asked him why he has resorted to such kind of things. I am a senior party member and I asked him why I have been abducted in broad daylight. In turn, Gamlin asked for my support," Mein said.

A large section of Congress MLAs and ministers are in Delhi led by state congress APCC chief and PWD Minister Nabam Tuki, demanding the removal of Gamlin.

The 60-member state assembly presently has 42 Congress members, 5 from the NCP, 5 from Trinamool, 4 from PPA, 3 from BJP, with one being an independent legislator. (ANI)
