Flood-hit Orissa using self-made rafts to ferry food and victims

Kendrapada (Orissa) , Thu, 15 Sep 2011 ANI

Kendrapada (Orissa), Sep.15 (ANI): Residents of Orissa's Kendrapada district are making rafts from banana stems to carry flood victims and food items.

In the absence of medical and relief aid, the victims have made these makeshift rafts for commuting purposes.

The victims were disappointed by the state government's response in providing relief in these times of distress.

Residents of Padona and Raghopur villages are making these rafts for transporting edible items and animals.

Flood victims have taken refuge at areas of higher altitude.

"People are sitting on the tops of the roofs of their houses. They are not even able to go to the toilet or for any other important work. We are using these rafts made from banana stems to ferry people to go the toilets and other works," said Sushanta.

Temples and other small sheds were completely submerged in floodwater with only the rooftops visible.

Heavy rains have caused the rivers in Orissa to overflow, leading to breaches in embankments.

The floods have affected over 52 villages in the district.

The flood situation has severely affected transportation services in the area.

According to media reports, high alert has been sounded in about 11 other districts. News reports also said that the government has asked the state Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) to be fully prepared for the flood rescue and relief operations. (ANI)
