Siliguri (West Bengal), Sep.12 (ANI): The low level of rainfall has made farmers in West Bengal apprehensive about their paddy crops this year.
Speaking to mediapersons, Rothin Roy, a farmer said the paddy crops were highly dependent on rainfall.
"This year the monsoon came before the season. Many crevices have developed in the paddy field due to low rainfall. We tried to grow some vegetable but they also depend on rain. Right at this moment, we are facing water crisis," said Roy.
Paddy is the principal crop of West Bengal farmers and farming is the main source of their livelihood.
"The condition of the crops is very bad. This is making our lives miserable. We are totally dependent on the farmland. If the same situation continues, it would hamper our livelihood," said Pankaj Barman, another farmer.
He added that the price of fertilisers has witnessed a sharp rise in the recent past, further impeding the farmers who are unable to use them to save their paddy crops.
Low rainfall in the region has also led to a decrease in moisture content of the soil.
Over 100,000 farmers depend on agriculture in Siliguri. Other districts like Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and North-Dinajpur districts too faced the same crisis.(ANI)
