Dimapur, Sep 9 (ANI): With peace and normalcy gradually returning to the region, both private and government institutions are making huge efforts to lift the standard of education in Nagaland, following which, the Patkai Christian College of Dimapur has introduced a course on human rights education.

This course is the first of its kind and will be mandatory for students of all disciplines as an add-on subject.

The Dean of ICFAI University in Dimapur launched the course long with the other senior members of the Patkai College. This course aims at enabling students to acquire a holistic perspective on human rights.

"Introducing human rights at the college level or Institute is very important. Because when they study about Human Rights it is not only getting chance to know what right do they have in the individual but at the same time when they study and when they know they get awareness of what others have the same right," said Patkai Christian College Director Nzanbeni Patton.

"So, introducing this Human Rights into curriculum will help a lot in making a student a better person as well as it will benefit our society," he added.

Patkai Christian College Principal Husazu Epao termed this move to be beneficial for society at large, stating that students would spread the education they receive and educate other people around.

"It will be beneficial to the society at large and state because our students will spread the education received and they would go on educating other people so the network of Human Rights Education will develop starting from the Patkai Christian College," said Epao.

The importance of human rights studies in contemporary times will help students in their future academic pursuits.

This course was introduced in July after formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The college recently organized a small cultural event to mark the occasion that was attended by scores of enthusiastic students.

"I want to learn on this particular subject human rights as we are living in a democratic country and democracy itself emphasize on a human rights so Patkai College Authority has done a big job not only in Nagaland, but in the northeastern region by introducing this human rights education to every student as we all require to know what is human right?" said Rona, a student.

"According to me, through this subject especially for the student we would be benefit because most of the time we tent to go what is happening around us. When we study human rights as a subject we will learn that what kind of liberty, freedom and opportunity has given each and everyone of us," added Singa, another student.

Over the years, many such efforts have been launched to strengthen the education sector in Nagaland.

Both government and private institutions have been aiming for higher education, midday meal schemes have been initiated to attract poor children, awards are given and meritorious students are felicitated to motivate them and educational fairs and seminars are regularly organized to raise awareness among students.
