Cash-for-vote scam: Role of beneficiaries should also be probed, says BJP

New Delhi, Tue, 06 Sep 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Sep 6 (ANI): In an indirect reference to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) while commenting on former Samajwadi Party (SP) General Secretary Amar Singh's arrest on Tuesday said the role of the beneficiaries should also be probed in connection with the 2008 cash-for-vote scam.

"Since Amar Singh has been sent to jail, I think it is the right time for him to reveal what's the reason and the influence that made him to take such steps to save the government. It is the high time for Amar Singh to clear the matter and reveal the beneficiaries," said BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Amar Singh, who was arrested earlier in the day over his alleged role in the 2008 cash-for-vote scam after a Delhi Court rejected his plea for a bail, reached New Delhi's Tihar Jail this evening.

Singh has been remanded in judicial custody till September 19.

Two former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers Faggan Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora have also been arrested and sent to judicial custody.

Rudy, however, refused to comment on the arrest of the BJP lawmakers in connection with the case.

Meanwhile, BJP lawmaker Ashok Argal, who was also mentioned in the chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police, said the matter got the right turn only after the Supreme Court intervened.

"It was the Congress government and they did not play the right role. Where was Delhi Police for the past three years? One should ask this to police, it was only when Supreme Court created the pressure only then action was initiated," he said.

The cash-for-votes scam had rocked proceedings in the Lok Sabha in 2008, when the ruling UPA Government, led by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, allegedly bribed lawmakers of other parties to help wining the confidence vote. (ANI)
