Lucknow, Sep 5 (ANI): The lawyer community in Uttar Pradesh struck work on Monday to agitate against the killing of the two lawyers by notaries, following an altercation between them over alleged extortion of money.
The killing occurred in Lakhimpur Kheri district, when somebody from the group of 'lekhpals' (employees of the revenue department) opened indiscriminate fire after a clash broke out with the advocates.
The root cause of the spat is reported to be a tussle between lawyers and a lekhpal, Ajayendra Awasthi, who was accused of high handedness.
"There is too much corruption in the state and to get rid of this corruption, some lawyers had complained to the SPO (Security Police Officer) and tehsildar (local revenue official). But these two were also involved, which is why they did not take any action. They provoked the association and they were mentally prepared that they would fire and they murdered the two lawyers. That is why we have a strike today," said Abdul Razzaq, President, Uttar Pradesh Bar Council.
Meanwhile, members of Uttar Pradesh Bar Council condemned the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the guilty lekhpals under National Security Act (NSA).
"As of now, we are holding a strike. After that, we will take a decision and we urge the residents of Uttar Pradesh to agitate against corruption, so that we can eliminate it completely," said Razzaq.
Police have detained 35 lekhpals and recovered one rifle and a carton of bullets from the spot. (ANI)
