Bhopal, Sep 4 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh sportspersons extended their full support to the proposed radical National Sports Development Bill, under which governing sports bodies would be brought under the ambit of Right to Information Act.
The players, who extended their support to the bill were present at the 23rd National inter zonal Junior Athletics championships on Saturday in Bhopal.
They also met Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken and backed the proposed legislation, which sought for the maintenance of transparency in the various sports federations of the country.
"We had a meeting with Ajay Maken in Delhi two days ago. All the Arjuna award winners as well as the Padma Shri awardees had a meeting with Ajay Maken. There was a press conference held there. We want this bill to be passed, but I feel that the age limit of 70 years is not right," said wrestler Kripa Shankar Singh.
"There are sportspersons who have a lot of energy, even at the age of 70 and are very sincere towards their work," he added.
The Sports Transparency Bill seeks to limit the tenure of all the sports administrators and bring the federations under the ambit of India's landmark legislation Right to Information (RTI) Act that enables a citizen to ascertain and monitor almost all projects, programmes and institutions.
The suggested Bill aims to reserve at least 25 percent posts for the former players in respective federations.
The objective of the bill is to prevent the non-players from making their way to the various federations as they used to sit on plump positions by wielding money and muscle power.
Around 44 sports federations, except the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), have agreed to accept the proposed legislation.
"Regarding the Right to Information (RTI), we should be very transparent and we are in favour of that and now also we are in the RTI and we are replying for the RTI. We have got no problem with the bill. In fact, it is very transparent. So far, I feel the age barrier is there. But that can be considered by the government because those who have been into athletics are within the age of 35 and 45 years and then it goes even further," said M.L. Dogra, Director, Athletics Federation of India.
"The age limit can be reconsidered by the government, that's their arena. But, of course the RTI, accounts and other accountabilities should be very transparent and we are in favour of that," he added. (ANI)
