London, Sept 2 (ANI): A UK supermarket chain will put two upmarket wines from India- each said to match spicy food- for the first time on it shelves.
Waitrose is introducing Ritu Viognier and Zampa Syrah, the white and red vintages made from viognier and syrah - traditional French grape varieties - in the Maharashtra region of western India, the Daily Mail reported.
"The quality of Indian wine has improved a great deal over the last five years with investment and expertise pouring into the industry," said Matt Smith, who has bought the wines for the supermarket.
"India has some ideal regions for grape growing. It is exciting to be the first multiple retailer in the UK to showcase the quality this fascinating country has to offer," he added.
Wine buyers at Waitrose are convinced the standard of the wine from India now matches the demands of British consumers.
Ritu Viognier is a crisp, aromatic white wine with floral and peach aromas. It is said be well matched with classic spicy dishes - perhaps a Vindaloo.
Ritu, which means 'season' in Sanskrit, has been created by Abhay Kewadkar who is recognised as India's foremost wine maker and has modelled his vineyard near Baramati on a French chateau and will go on sale at a discounted price of 6.99 pounds.
Zampa Syrah is a 100 per cent Syrah wine, which is produced by winemaker Nic Van Arde, in the dry, tropical climate of the Nasik Valley, in the Pune region, inland from Mumbai.
The syrah is said to be rich and dark-fruited with hints of pepper and spice. It will initially cost 8.49 pounds. (ANI)
