London, Sept 1 (ANI): Researchers have now come up with a new method that could halve the time needed to board airplanes.
According to the new 'Steffen Method', passengers should board from the back, each taking a seat on every other row, starting with the window seats first.
Doing this gives everyone more time to sort their bags out. This sequence continues down one side until every other window seat is full. Then passengers should do the same on the other side.
Next, the remaining window seats are filled. Once that is the case, the same begins with the middle seats and then the aisles.
The theory is named after American astrophysicist Jason Steffen, who worked it out in 2008 'out of curiosity' after getting stuck in a long queue in the departure lounge, the Daily Mail reports.
The theory was tested using a mock-up of a Boeing 757 aeroplane and 72 volunteer passengers with luggage.
Most airlines generally fill aeroplanes in blocks but the new technique did it twice as fast.
Dr Steffen said the results for the most part were exactly how he predicted in 2008.
"I didn't know how long it took people to put their luggage away and walk down the aisle. But the basic conclusions I drew were realized," the paper quoted him, as saying.
"The method I proposed did the best, and the other ones landed where I would have predicted," he added. (ANI)
