Kollam (Kerala), Aug 20(ANI): Union Tourism Minister Subodhkant Sahai today inaugurated the second Southern Regional Conference of Tourism Ministers at Kollam, Kerala.
The objective of the two-day conference, organized by the Ministry of Tourism is to bring together all the states, Union Territory administrations and the private sector stakeholders of the southern region on a common platform to discuss and take forward a holistic and integrated development of tourism in the region.
The participants include states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and the Union Territories of Puducherry, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy was the chief guest at the inaugural function.
Kerala Tourism Minister A.P. Anilkumar presided over the function.
Anand Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, made a detailed presentation on "Perspectives and New Strategies for Development of India Tourism" outlining the vision of the ministry for developing tourism during the 12th Five Year Plan.
This set the tone for the state governments and Union Territory administrations to share their developmental plans through comprehensive presentations.
The presentations made by the state governments and Union Territory administrations highlighted issues relating to development of infrastructure through integrated planning, public private partnership, convergence of resources, manpower development, strategies for promoting of intra and interstate domestic tourism and implementation of code of conduct for safe, honourable and sustainable tourism.
The delegates will also visit Ashtamudi Lake, the second largest lake in Kerala which is being developed as a new tourism destination by Kerala Tourism.
This project is being developed with financial assistance from the Union Tourism Ministry.
The strong presence of the private sector representing various trade bodies and associations like FICCI, CII, ADTOI, IATO, HAI, FHRAI and ITTA reinforced the commitment of all the stake holders, demonstrating success of the public private partnership spirit for the development of tourism. (ANI)
