Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani's alleged murderer may dye of brain tumour

London, Wed, 03 Aug 2011 ANI

London, Aug 3 (ANI): The South African man who had allegedly shot Indian-origin bride Anni Dewani during her honeymoon in Cape Town last year, is dying from a brain tumour, a court has heard.

Twenty three-year-old Xolile Mngeni is reportedly suffering from hallucination after a failed surgery for cancer in June. He has failed to appear before the court to face the murder trial.

South Afgican police had alleged that the victim's husband, Shrien Dewani, had masterminded and paid for the murder. Dewani has vehemently denied this.

A statement from brain surgeon Patrick Semple said: "There is a high likelihood that even if he completes all his treatment, he will not be in a medical state that would enable him to answer charges in court."

"He may well demise as a result of the tumour and its complications. His current level of neurological function is poor and he is not orientated for place or time and also has visual gaze abnormalities and visual hallucinations," the Daily Mail quoted the statement, as saying.

Anni was shot once in the neck, and her body was found in the back of a taxi near Cape Town. Her husband Shrien has been accused in South Africa of paying for her killing.

Earlier, the couple's driver Zola Tongo, who made a confession and was jailed for 18 years after securing a plea bargain, said that the Briton had paid him to organise the killing.

Meanwhile, court presiding has been postponed till September 20. (ANI)
