Onboard/New Delhi, July 29(ANI): Foreign Secretary-designate Ranjan Mathai on Friday said that the United States has not specified any "calendar" to India for ratifying its liability law on nuclear damages.
India had signed the UN Convention on Supplementary Compensation on Nuclear Damages (CSC) at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria, in October 2010.
"We have reiterated our commitment that we will sign this convention. I don't think any specific calendar was specified. We have underlined our intention to go ahead and finalize this," Mathai said.
"This is the issue on which I think there are many views. We have explained that whatever action we take have to be in accordance of our own laws enacted in our Parliament," he added.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, during her recent visit to India, had made it clear that India must change its civil nuclear liability regime to make the 2008 nuke deal between the two countries work.
She had reportedly said that Washington was committed to its historic civil nuclear cooperation agreement with New Delhi, but would expect India to ratify the Convention on Supplementary Compensation this year and make its liability regime conform to international practices. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
