Thiruvananthapuram, July 17 (ANI): An ocean information system to predict marine-related natural disasters was commissioned at the Vizhinjam Harbour near Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, on Saturday.
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy inaugurated the Ocean State Forecast and Fishery Information System for Kerala.
The state-of-the-art device would be able to predict tsunamis, with 80 percent accuracy, tidal waves and the direction of tides nearly three days in advance.
The Centre for Earth Science Studies has set up this state-of-art system.
"There was no system earlier in India or anywhere in the country for water level recording. Now (with) this wave reading body, recording can be considered for prediction of the waves and other natural disasters," said C. K. Sasidharan, a scientist, Centre for Earth Science Studies.
The information about the ocean would be conveyed through digital display boards kept at coastal areas and near religious institutions, via SMS, through radio and television channels.
It would be beneficial to fishermen, residents of coastal area and also the Coast Guard personnel.
"This can be useful for the fishermen going into the sea for fishing and all those activities," added Sasidharan.
In December 2004, a magnitude 9.15 quake off the coast of Sumatra triggered an Indian Ocean tsunami that killed around 226,000 people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and nine other countries. (ANI)
