Istanbul, July 15(ANI): NATO and world leaders are discussing a new exit strategy for Libyan dictator Muammar al-Gaddafi, which would allow him to stay in the country after leaving power, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said.
The leaders will be meeting in Istanbul to consider proposals that allow for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Libya without Gaddafi's unconditional surrender or flight.
"An exit strategy for Gadhafi to leave power, but not necessarily the country, should be sought by revising the UN Resolution 1973 if necessary," the Telegraph quoted Davutoglu, as saying.
The United States and the United Kingdom, however, remain skeptical of proposals to negotiate with the Libyan regime.
The United Kingdom's official position is that there can be no negotiations while Gaddafi is in power.
Gaddafi has been in power in Libya since he overthrew King Idris in a 1969 bloodless coup and established the Libyan Arab Republic.
His almost 42 years in power make him one of the longest-serving rulers in history.
However, earlier this year, major political protests, which were inspired by recent protests in Tunisia, Egypt and other parts of the Arab world, broke out in Libya against Gaddafi's government and quickly turned into a civil war.
Gaddafi had vowed to "die a martyr" if necessary in his fight against rebels and external forces, saying that those rebelling against his government deserved to die. (ANI)
