No political agenda during farmers' meet: Rita Bahuguna Joshi

Aligarh , Fri, 08 Jul 2011 ANI

Aligarh, July 8 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Rita Bahuguna Joshi on Friday said that the Kisan Mahapanchayat, scheduled for July 9 in Aligarh, would be minus the Congress flag or any political agenda.

Talking to reporters here, Joshi said the stage would not be used for any other purpose but to address the problems of the farmers.

"This is a farmers mahapanchayat. No politician will speak during this meet. Only farmers' representatives would speak. There would be no flag of the Congress party on the stage. The platform is for the representatives where they would come and speak because many of them belong to different political parties," Joshi added.

Nearly two months after he was whisked away by Uttar Pradesh police officials for joining a farmers' protest, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has dared the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) regime again by undertaking a four-day march to a Congress-organised kisan maha panchayat in Aligarh to get a feel of the heartland's simmering land problems.

The Congress had planned the Kisan Mahapanchayat at Bhatta- Parsaul, where two villagers had died in police firing, but was forced to shift the venue to Aligarh's exhibition grounds following pressure from the state government.

Meanwhile, Mayawati Government has denied permission to Rahul Gandhi to hold a rally in Bhatta Parsaul.

The Congress is establishing contact with farmers' groups in and around the region where acquisition of land has been a major source of confrontation between them and the police (ANI)
