Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), July 7 (ANI): In the wake of growing atrocities against women, President Pratibha Devisingh Patil on Thursday said strict punishments should be meted out to those involved in crimes against women.
Addressing a seminar here, President Patil said: "Any crime against women should not be tolerated and the perpetrator should be dealt with most severely. Also, social evils need to be eradicated, changes will happen by altering social attitudes and by overcoming prejudices."
President Patil further said men and women should be equally treated, as both play vital roles for the progress of the country.
"Men and women are the two wheels of our nation. Both have to be equally strong to surge the rate in a balanced way. If one crumbs or one of them is weak, it slows down the pace of the nation itself," she said.
Atrocities against women are increasing in the country with the recent cases of rape and murder being reported from Uttar Pradesh spreading shocks across the country. (ANI)
