New Delhi, June 29 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has congratulated Christine Lagarde on her appointment as the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
In a letter to Lagarde, the Mukherjee said that the appointment reflects the high regard in which she was held by different countries of the world.
"There is expectation that, under her leadership, the IMF will deal effectively and fairly with the serious challenges, which confront the global economy," he added.
He said that a robust and sustained global economic recovery is a priority for all of us, as is the task of carrying forward the process of reform to ensure that emerging economies have a greater voice in the decision making processes of the IMF.
Mukherjee also said the Government of India looks forward to working closely with her in her new assignment.
Lagarde, 55, is the first woman named to the top IMF post since the institution's inception in 1944. (ANI)
