Rahul Gandhi meets Uttar Pradesh rape victim

New Delhi , Mon, 27 Jun 2011 ANI

New Delhi, June 27 (ANI): Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi today met the 14-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh, undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after being stabbed in the eye by two men who tried to rape her.

Gandhi went to the Rajendra Prasad Eye Centre at the AIIMS at 10.45 a.m. and spoke to the girl and her parents.

His visit comes close on the heels of the Congress attacking the Mayawati government over the alleged spurt in incidents of rape and murder in her state.

The victim was allegedly kidnapped by two accused, Kuldip Loniya and Niranjan Yadav, from her home in Ghurpurwa village in Kannauj district on June 19 and was stabbed in her eyes when she resisted a rape attempt.

The girl was discovered in the fields by villagers and was later rushed to the district hospital.

The doctor who operated the girl said: "The left eye is completely damaged. The inner parts of the eye are severely damaged. The cornea is badly damaged, may not come back to its normal condition." (ANI)
