New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): Stating that the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh has deteriorated, Congress Party on Monday criticized the Mayawati Government for not taking any effective action on crimes against women.

"We have always from this podium and from Uttar Pradesh, we have repeatedly condemned the rapidly deteriorating law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh. And we have repeatedly called upon the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati, to take immediate action to ensure the restoration of law and order in that state," said Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan.

She added that in the last few months, there have been horrific incidents and terrible atrocities against women in the state, especially those belonging to the disadvantaged sections of society.

Natarajan further said that there is a major human right violation in the state.

"There is no intention on any body's part to politicise these major human rights violations. These are instances of aggression and violence against the most disadvantaged section of society and are really a blot upon any civilised society, democracy and certainly upon an elected government," she added.

Uttar Pradesh is on high alert since three rape cases have been reported in the past 48 hours.

In yet another shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh, a 35-year old married woman was allegedly gang raped by five men and then set on fire in Etah district late last night.

On Saturday, two rape cases were reported from the state that included alleged rape on a minor, who was also stabbed in the eye for resisting rape. In another case, a man in Ranipur, Beladi village, allegedly raped a Dalit girl at gunpoint. (ANI)
