Jaipur/New Delhi, June 20 (ANI): Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has cleared the mercy petition of 80-year-old Pakistani national Khalil Chishty serving life term in Ajmer jail, and forwarded it to State Governor Shivraj Patil.
According to reports, Governor Patil is expected to discuss the issue with Rajasthan Home Secretary.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has asked Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to examine if the request of Supreme Court Judge Justice Markandey Katju for pardon to Chishty could be considered on 'humanitarian' grounds.
Dr. Singh in his letter to Chidambaram said: "I shall be grateful if you could examine the request of Justice Katju to see if a pardon to Dr. Khalil Chishty could be considered on humanitarian grounds."
Justice Markandey Katju of the Supreme Court has appealed to the Prime Minister to release the Pakistani national on humanitarian grounds.
In an email sent to the Prime Minister through Congress MP Rajiv Shukla, Justice Katju said he was making this appeal, not as a judge but as a human being, for the release of Dr. Khalil Chishty, who is old and infirm, under Article 72 of the Constitution. (ANI)
