Ahmedabad, June 20 (ANI): Gujarat Police on Monday arrested fourteen Somali pirates and three Yemeni nationals after the boat's engine broke down near the Junagadh District coastline.
After a month of being stranded in the sea without food or water, these pirates reached the Gujarat coast.
The group of drifters, was spotted by villagers along the coast, who alerted the authorities.
"In this boat, there were 17 men. Out of these 17, 14 men are from Somalia and other three are from Yemen. The owner of this boat also belongs to Yemen. These pirates had set out from Somalia, from 'Tuhen' island and these pirates were involved in fishing in their country. Around May 20, the boat's engine broke down. That's why; they got drifted towards the Gujarat coast d," said V. D. Gohil, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Veraval.
The Coast Guard and the Indian Navy were caught unawares about the Somali pirates initially, thus raising questions about coastal security preparedness.
Before reaching the Gujarat coast, these Somali pirates had looted a Yemenese ship called 'Al Hara'.(ANI)
