Reports of new bird flu cases are coming repeatedly from West Bengal and hence forcing authority to speed up the culling process. Two new blocks in Murshidabad and Birbhum are reportedly have affected by avian influenza.
The state administration has set a revised target of 28 lakh birds to be culled. So far 25.16 birds have been killed in the affected districts.
The West Bengal government has also announced to provide compensation to poultry farmers whose birds have died or would have to be culled but only to those who comes under the affected districts.
The Union Animal Husbandry department has kept a tight vigil to prevent the spread of virus to new areas.
Fear in Haryana & UP
The Uttar Pradesh officials have culled thousands of chickens in Varanasi and Shahjahanpur district supplied from West Bengal. Blood samples are also collected from different farms and have sent to Bhopal laboratory for investigation.
Earlier several cases of chicken death were reported in Bhiwani district of Haryana but the authority claimed that the death was not due to avian influenza.
As precautionary measures both states have suspended poultry imports from West Bengal and have been collecting blood samples of dead birds from different places. Also efforts have been made from the health circles to make aware of the people about bird-flu and it’s possibly human form, though all cases of human-flu have been tasted negative in West Bengal.
Threat from Border
As per government sources neighbouring country Bangladesh is the worst affected with 30 out of 64 districts under avian influenza. Reports are also coming that Bangladesh is dumping dead birds near the border region that sets another threat to the West Bengal district.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has also sent a request to Bangladesh authority to share the ‘gene sequence’ of the virus strain and also to develop a joint system to dispose dead poultry so that to keep safe either side of population.
