Nainital, June 4(ANI): In a bid to revive the sport of yachting, the Indian Army in conjunction with the Nainital Yacht Boat Club organized the Surya Sailing Regatta, a yachting competition, in Nainital, Uttarakhand.
A total of eight teams participated in the two-day event, which concluded today.
The event was presided over by Indian Army chief General V. K. Singh.
"The Indian army has always tried to popularize dying sports in the region.
We want that people from all across the country should be aware of yachting.
They should come here and participate in competitions such as these. The Naini Lake is a beautiful lake in Nainital and competitions like these can be easily organised here. Concentrated efforts like these would definitely attract participants from all over India," said Deepak Saran, Commandant of the Surya Sailing Regatta.
Citing the importance of this competition, Kavish Nanda, secretary of the Nainital Yacht Boat Club, said the competition would foster interaction between Indian Army and civilians.
"Yachting as a sport has been ignored long by people in the region as well as India. This is a joint venture by the Central Command of the Indian Army as well the Boat House Club in Nainital to facilitate interaction between civilians and the armed forces. This will help to revive the sport in the region," he said.
This is the 11th year of the competition. (ANI)
