Siliguri, May 29(ANI): Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) party chief Bimal Gurung on Sunday arrived in Kolkata to congratulate the new West Bengal government led by Mamata Banerjee that took office last week.
The GJM has been spearheading the demand for a separate Gorkhaland state to be carved out of West Bengal to protect their culture and heritage.
Gurung said that he had lots of expectations from the new government with regard to the separate state issue.
"I am going to congratulate the new government formed. We also wanted that changes should take place in Bengal. We will talk patiently. We have lots of expectations," Gurung had said before leaving from Siliguri airport.
Earlier in the month, Banerjee's party, the Trinamool Congress, had dethroned the 34-year-old Left Front government in West Bengal.
The Gorkha population in West Bengal is estimated to be around a million. (ANI)
