Bhavnagar (Gujarat), May 28 (ANI): Farmers in Gujarat's Bhavnagar District have pledged to oppose the construction of the 6,000-megawatt nuclear power plant proposed in Mithivirdi region, saying they would not allow the government to acquire their fertile lands.
The construction of this power plant requires about 780 acres of land, most of which is agricultural. The farmers have decided not to accept the government's offer to buy their lands, however lucrative the compensation may be.
They said that they are not against development, but are not willing to give away their fertile lands, which is a major source of livelihood.
"We are not against the industry, neither are we against the plant. But where (what about) the destruction of the fertile soil, the fertile land and agricultural crop and uprooting the farmers in thousands? It cannot be possible?" said Govardhan Bhai Jadasia, an environmental activist.
They said the setting up of the power plant would cause much destruction to the ecology of the region as well.
"The seismographic system of Bhavnagar is southeast and is always sensitive. The seismographic system is about 3.424 Richter scale. So, this is more dangerous for the entire district. That is why, the farmers of this area have decided not to give a single inch of land to the power plant," said Jadasia.
The Centre had earlier sanctioned permission for the plant, stating it is necessary to meet the demand for electricity in the region. (ANI)
