Manali, May 28(ANI): Rohtang Pass, the road link between Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti districts of Himachal Pradesh, has been reopened for traffic after heavy snowfall shut it down for five months.
The General Reserve Engineering Force (GREF), a wing of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) that maintains crucial highways, cleared as much as 25-30 feet snow from the highway.
"Last year, we cleared the road at around April 14, then again we received snowfall and the road was shut, but we re-opened the road in three days. This year the snowfall has broken the record of last 30 years. Earlier, we used to remove 10-15 feet of heap of snow, this year we have cleared heaps of 25-30 feet of snow," said A.K. Dikshit, commander of the 38 Task Force of the GREF.
Many villages in the Lahaul Valley were cut off from the rest of the country since late December after the closure of the pass.
The 13,051-feet-high Rohtang Pass is located 51 kilometres from Manali. The pass is open from May to November. (ANI)
