Paris, May 27 (ANI): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that Washington has not taken an official position as yet on who should be the next president of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but also believes that French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is qualified for the post.
"The United States has not taken an official position. Obviously, other candidates may come forth. But speaking unofficially and personally, I am a strong supporter of qualified women, of which she (Lagarde) is certainly one, being given the opportunities to lead international organizations," Clinton said.
She also said that the arrest of Dominique Strauss-Kahn for allegedly assaulting a hotel made, and the resultant anti-French sentiment in the American media, should not be taken too seriously. This is an ongoing criminal investigation. I cannot comment on any proceeding. But it's about one person, and it's not about France and the United States. And I have great confidence in our system of justice and it will proceed," Clinton said.
She said that the IMF is continuing its important work and that she had great confidence in its professionalism.
While admitting that no two great nations can agree on everything, Clinton said the relationship between France and the United States is deep, broad, enduring, and one that she valued highly.he also said that after she quits being Secretary of State, she hoped to pursue her other interests, including her commitment to human rights and women's rights.
"I want everyone to share in a more prosperous, peaceful world where security and opportunity go hand in hand. And so for me, I will continue to advocate as I always have, even before I was in any official position. So I'm sure whatever the future holds, it will hold work like that, and I look forward to it," Clinton said. (ANI)
