Aligarh, May 23(ANI): The lock manufacturing industry in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, is facing a slump as it is facing manpower shortage due to the migration of skilled labourers to other states.
Lock dealers in the city said workers are leaving their traditional occupation and migrating to various states to earn higher wages in other industries.
"The main reason of migration of labourers is they earn fewer wages and no proper facilities are provided. Due to less wages, 40 percent of labourers have migrated to Rajkot," said Shailendra, a lock manufacturing factory owner.
The President of the Aligarh Lock Manufacturers and Traders, Salahuddin, said the shortage could be long-lasting as traditional lock-makers have not taught their skills to youths.
"The artisans and labourers from Aligarh have migrated to Rajkot because they are not getting proper wages here. They are not getting enough wages for their work and the prices of basic commodities are rising day by day," Salahuddin said.
"The artisans and labourers are not teaching their skills to their coming generations because it gets them minimal wages. So, they are going into jobs where they get proper wages for their work," he added.
Aligarh, also known as the 'City of Locks', is amongst the largest manufacturers and suppliers of locks, and the annual turnover of the industry is said to be about two billion rupees. (ANI)
