New Delhi, May 21(ANI): Defending the Congress party led-United Progressive Alliance at the Centre over its perceived inaction in a string of recently-exposed scams, Congress leader Mohsina Kidwai said on Saturday that the government had shown no leniency to leaders accused of corruption and graft.
Addressing a news conference in New Delhi, Kidwai said: "I feel that as and when Congress party found out where corruption was taking place, we acted on the perpetrators without discriminating on the political power and status of the individual."
"We have acted on everyone who was accused of corruption. We are all against corruption. You are aware how we acted whenever cases of financial malpractice were revealed, and how we did not hesitate to send the leaders to prison," she added.
Since the last few months, the Congress party-led Union government has come under intense scrutiny over its alleged involvement in a spate of scams exposed by media and vigilance agencies.
The multi-billion dollar scandals, such as the 2G telecom spectrum allocation scam, 19th Commonwealth Games fiasco and the Adarsh Housing Society scam, have severely dented the image of the government.
The scams have also triggered fierce public and political outcry against the Congress leaders and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who has been criticised by many for not taking 'concrete' steps in bringing the guilty to book. (ANI)
