Brit-Indian honeymooner's brother tried to get Shrien's CCTV footage with convicted taxi driver

London , Sun, 10 Apr 2011 ANI

London, Apr 10 (ANI): Brother of Shrien Dewani, the Brit-Indian millionaire who is charged with masterminding his wife's murder during their honeymoon in Cape Town last year, had tried to obtain the CCTV footage of Shrien talking to a murder convict of his wife, leaked police documents claim.

Dewani is accused by South African police of arranging the contract killing of wife Anni in November last year. She was shot after the apparent hijacking of their taxi in a township in Cape Town.

Preyen Dewani is said to have asked the security manager of the Cape Grace Hotel in Cape Town, to hand over the footage of his brother talking to Zola Tongo, the couple's taxi driver who is now serving 18 years after confessing to organising the killing. He has also claimed that Dewani was the man behind the murder plot, the Daily Mail reports.

The alleged request for the footage was reportedly rejected because the manager had been summoned by prosecutors as a possible witness.

The claim is made in a police dossier forms part of an application by South African authorities to have Dewani extradited from Britain to stand trial.

The paper quoted police captain Paul Hendrikse as saying that Preyen had asked for the footage soon after Shrien returned to Britain following his wife, Anni's death.

"I am concerned there may have been an attempt to interfere with the investigation," he added.

According to the police dossier, the footage shows Dewani staying in the cab that drove him and Anni from the airport the day before the killing, and talking to Tongo for four minutes after Anni entered the hotel.

Thirty-two-year-old Preyen is a director of the Bristol-based care-home company run by Shrien. (ANI)
