Nainital, Apr 9 (ANI): Villagers of Alchona village in Uttarakhand have constructed check dams to save their farms from water problems.
Last year the check dam was washed away due to heavy rain and the villagers were suffering since then as most of them depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
The flood caused much destruction to the village and villagers are still suffering from it.
No major renovation works have been undertaken in the village.
The villagers complained that the government did not pay any heed towards their problems.
"During July-August last year, this dam was washed away. It was used for irrigation for about 5 hectares of land. We informed the government about this. Many leaders came here and saw this but no one did anything to reconstruct the dam," said a villager.
However the authorities blamed the Central Government for not allotting enough compensation to carry out renovation works.
"We suffered a loss of more than 3 billion rupees. The compensation we received was about 5.7 million. We required more money to carry out the renovation works. We were expecting more money from the centre," said Shailesh Bagoli, Nainital District Magistrate.
Check dams are small barriers built in the direction of water flow for the purpose of irrigation as well as for water conservation. (ANI)
